The colonial war is the backdrop for a new show at Teatro Aveirense

On April 12th, a theatre play based on true letters from the Portuguese Colonial War will debut at the Teatro Aveirense, which links this conflict with the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Código Postal was created by director and playwright Marcos Barbosa specifically for Aveiro 2024, with the theme of the 2nd quarter of the Portuguese Capital of Culture, 'Culture and Democracy', and features the participation of Russian and Ukrainian actors exiled in Portugal due to the war.

The show is based on a set of letters exchanged between mother and son in 1965 and 1966. This correspondence was donated to Marcos Barbosa so that, one day, he could incorporate it into one of his creations. The letters now take shape in a theater piece that seeks to expand the echoes of these missives to establish connections with current affairs, namely with the invasion of Ukraine.

For the construction of the Postal Code text, the director, who was a programmer for the Performing Arts of Guimarães European Capital of Culture, had several contributions. It was a collaborative process that began in a drama laboratory in New York, as part of the Novos Bardos Festival, and which later extended to the show's cast.

This balance between reality and fiction, past and present, and the interconnection between various geographies makes Code Postal a show that promises to mark the 2024 Portuguese theater season.
