December at Teatro Aveirense

December promises to be an intense month at Teatro Aveirense. The main highlights include music and theatre, with five concerts and two shows, including a world premiere, but cinema will also play an important role.
The month begins with the first performance in Portugal by Trio Catch, a German ensemble with an enviable track record, which brings a programme that includes Beat Furrer's (1954) ‘aer’, as well as what is considered the most demanding chamber music work of all time: Helmut Lachenman's (1935) ‘Allegro Sostenuto’. The session will take place on 4 December and includes a conversation, as part of the Tubo de Ensaio series, promoted in partnership with the Arte no Tempo association.
Immediately afterwards, from 5 to 7 December, it will be the turn of the Red Cloud Teatro de Marionetas company to premiere ‘Precópio’, a mixture of grand guignol and mini-cabaret about the post-1974 and post-2025 periods, which takes in the Le Procope café, the French Revolution and the bars where conspiracies were hatched during the PREC. A show directed and written by Jorge Louraço Figueira.
A Solidarity Concert by the 10th Infantry Regiment is scheduled for 6 December, featuring the Porto Army Band and the Aveiro Music Conservatory Symphonic Band. Admission is free.
The Novas Quintas series will hold its last session of the year on 11 December with a concert by Girls 96, an electronic pop duo that debuted with the EP ‘1996’, where pulsating synthesizers and energetic beats meet raw, hypnotic voices.
12 December marks the return of the legendary Danças Ocultas, who are celebrating 36 years of musical collaboration with the tenth album of their career, entitled ‘Inspirar’, in a more intimate and intense style. An artistic and emotional turning point that reaffirms the identity of this quartet dedicated to the accordion.
Theatre returns to the spotlight with the show ‘A Caminho da Escola’ (On the Way to School) by the Catalan company Campi Qui Pugui, which tells the extraordinary story of three sisters who face daily obstacles and dangers to get to school. A show for the whole family, inspired by real stories of children from around the world, to be seen on 14 December.
The last show of the year will bring the Artistic School of the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory in Aveiro, namely the Choir. In addition to orchestral works, this concert will feature a Suite of Christmas Songs for Choir and Brass Ensemble, composed by Father José Joaquim Ribeiro, which combines traditional Christmas songs.
As usual, cinema will be part of the Teatro Aveirense programme, through the section Os Filmes das Nossas Terças (Our Tuesday Films), developed in partnership with the Plano Obrigatório association. In December, the films to be screened will be ‘It Was Just an Accident’, Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, by Jafar Panahi, ‘Lavagante’, by Mário Barroso, which was António-Pedro Vasconcelo's last screenplay and an adaptation of José Cardoso Pires’ last work, “O Agente Secreto” by Kleber Mendonça Filho, and “Urchin” by Harris Dickinson.
