Puppet show premieres at Teatro Aveirense

The premiere of Precópio, the new show by Red Cloud Teatro de Marionetas, will be featured in the Teatro Aveirense programme from 5 to 7 December, with performances at 9.30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The play, directed and written by Jorge Louraço Figueira, focuses on the political history of Portugal.
The show takes its name from Bar Procópio, a Lisbon nightclub where conspiracies were hatched until the early hours of the morning in the years following the 25th of April revolution. The Lisbon bar was opened in 1972 and named after the oldest café in Paris, Le Procope. It was frequented by the leading figures of the national political scene, especially during the period when the democratic regime was being established.
Over the course of an hour, with the bar as its headquarters, the twists and turns that the country underwent between 11 March and 25 November 1975, including the famous Hot Summer, are recounted. The main episodes of that dizzying year pass by the tables in a sequence of lively numbers, with music and video, created from the absurdity of the situations. It was in this creative chaos that contemporary Portugal was invented, and the story is told through puppets, in a mixture of grand guignol and mini cabaret.
This new creation by Red Cloud Teatro Marionetas, a company based in Aveiro, is co-produced by Teatro Aveirense/Aveiro City Council, with this support being accompanied by an artistic residency at Sala Estúdio between 24 November and 4 December.
