Film based on a short story by Mia Couto premieres at Teatro Aveirense

The film As Aves, based on a short story by Mia Couto and directed by Pedro Magano, has its premiere scheduled for March 5th, at 9:30 pm at Teatro Aveirense, as part of Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture. The session signals the celebrations of the 143rd anniversary of Teatro Aveirense, opened on March 5, 1881 and, since then, fundamental in the cultural life of the city and the region of Aveiro.

The feature film As Aves portrays an isolated old man who lives surrounded by water. He hates the gods and vents his laments with a bird he keeps imprisoned in a cage, a metaphor for his own life. However, he finds his freedom in the books he discovers at the library during his furtive wanderings around the city. A work inspired by the short story Death, Time and the Old Man, by Mia Couto, which the director crosses with the classic play As Aves, by Aristophanes.

Pedro Magano is from the Aveiro region and the film was shot in this territory, with much of the action taking place in the estuary. A filming rhythm planned according to the tides, in a location with difficult access and little mobility, but with enormous visual potential. The narrative is cyclical, meeting the concept of repetitive human life and the cyclical dimension of Time, as we know it.

The premiere of As Aves will be accompanied by a photography exhibition by Jorge Costa, with images from the shooting of the film and the places where it took place. It will be on display in the foyer of Teatro Aveirense between March 5th and 23rd.
