Hamlet by Nuno Cardoso at Teatro Aveirense
Published at — 26 May 2025
After its acclaimed premiere in Porto, the Teatro Aveiro is now showing Nuno Cardoso's take on William Shakespeare's Hamlet, a fundamental text of universal dramaturgy and the work that has generated the most literature after the Bible. A creation by the São João National Theatre to be seen in Aveiro on 30 and 31 May at 21h00.
The story of the Prince of Denmark is the story of our vacillation in the face of that primordial question: ‘Who am I?’. Hamlet is Western literature's archetype of the human conscience. The desire for revenge, deception and duplication (the play within the play) do not hide the emptiness that corrodes this Prince. In this, his sixth foray into the universe of the English playwright, Nuno Cardoso embarks on an enquiry into self-blindness, a pathology of modern times.
Hamlet features the resident cast of the São João National Theatre - Joana Carvalho, Lisa Reis, Patrícia Queirós, Paulo Freixinho, Pedro Almendra and Pedro Frias - joined by Alberto Magassela, João Cravo Cardoso, Jorge Mota, Mário Santos and Sandro Feliciano. The music is by Pedro ‘Peixe’ Cardoso, from Ornatos Violeta, costumes by Nelson Vieira and video by Luís Porto. A show produced in co-production with Teatro Aveirense / Aveiro City Council.
