Sara Barros Leitão's new creation premieres at Teatro Aveirense

Sara Barros Leitão premieres her next show, ‘Suplicantes", at Teatro Aveirense, with performances on 27 and 28 September, at 9.30 pm and 5 pm, respectively. A new creation that takes Aeschylus' Greek tragedy ‘As Suplicantes’ as its starting point to question the reality of our times.

In Aeschylus' work, fifty sisters are forced to marry fifty cousins against their will, so they decide to leave by boat, crossing the Mediterranean from Egypt to the shores of Greece, where they seek asylum. More than simply updating or bringing this tragedy into the present day, this show proposes to rewrite it. While in The Suppliants the chorus is made up of fifty women, in this rewriting, rather than highlighting gender issues, the focus is on class issues, since class struggle continues to be the struggle that brings together all intersectionalities.

In this play, Sara Barros Leitão reflects on the European project itself, on borders, on pacts of hospitality, welcome and integration.
