Teatro Aveirense unveils its September programme

Teatro Aveirense has just unveiled its September programme. The rentrée involves the premiere of two shows, by Sara Barros Leitão and Gisela Ferreira, as well as the presentation of new creations by Olga Roriz, Mickaël de Oliveira, Ana Madureira with Vahan Kerovpyan and Susie Filipe, as well as the presentation of the final works of the 2025 Dramaturgy Laboratory.

The premiere of ‘Suplicantes’ by Sara Barros Leitão is one of the highlights of September. Co-produced by Teatro Aveirense, the show uses Aeschylus' text of the same name to reflect on the theme of migration in current times, in an exercise to question Europe, borders, hospitality and integration. The date is 27 and 28 September.

Olga Roriz's ‘O Salvado’ also promises to make an impression on the Aveiro audience. Due to be performed on 17 September, this is a new solo by the dancer and choreographer, her first since The Rite of Spring, presented twelve years ago. A creation that asks what can be saved from catastrophe and what can still be preserved from a seven-decade existence, it was developed over the course of a year and six artistic residencies, one of which was at the Aveirense Theatre, which also co-produced the show.

‘Crocodile Club’, by Mickaël de Oliveira, has yet another stop on its successful tour at Teatro Aveirense. With names like Inês Castelo Branco and Bárbara Branco in the cast, this is a show that seeks to address the current Portuguese political spectrum and the new populisms that seek to manipulate dissatisfaction and stoke fear. ‘Crocodile Club’ is about the limits of democracy, revolving around a weekend retreat among friends. Screening on 6 September.

On 11 September, Gisela Ferreira's ‘nome de solteira’ premieres. Its central theme is unpaid work and gender inequality, calling into question the ideal of the perfect woman, who takes care of everything and everyone without ever neglecting her appearance. This project was the winner of the creation grant Palcos Instáveis 2ª Casa - Especial 3rd edition from Laboratório de Aveiro.

In music, the highlight was the concert by Susie Filipe, presenting her first solo album, ‘Em Tempo Real’. Susie Filipe is a recognised actress and drummer from Aveiro, involved in projects such as Moonshiners, SIRICAIA, ESTRO/WATTS and Sangue Suor, among others. She performs for the first time as a singer-songwriter, using guitar, piano and drums, in a show scheduled for 20 September in which music, poetry and theatre live in real time.

For families, ‘Quero Um Piano’ (I Want a Piano) by Ana Madureira and Vahan Kerovpyan is scheduled for 21 September, a show in which Eastern micro-tones, Western half-tones, half-words and characters without socks invite us to take care of our own tonalities and to know how to see and listen to those of others.

On 13 and 14 September, the participants of the Dramaturgy Lab 2025 will bring to the stage the result of a process that involved training sessions with figures such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tim Etchells, Mickaël de Oliveira and Teresa Coutinho, among others. The Aveirense Theatre's Dramaturgy Laboratory aims to encourage dramatic textual creation and promote knowledge and theoretical reflection on the different historical manifestations of dramaturgy. This final presentation, entitled ‘Places are not for later (what was once there)’, features 13 short works from which a tour of the interior of the Teatro Aveirense is proposed.
