The world of selfies and social media
Published at — 23 February 2026
João Garcia Miguel and Eddy Becquart present the show ‘Do Tirar Pelo Natural’ at Teatro Aveirense, a play inspired by the phenomenon of selfies and social media to reflect on identity and individual freedom. A multimedia creation that combines theatre and dance, to be seen on 27 February at 9.30 pm.
For this show, João Garcia Miguel and Eddy Becquart took the book ‘Do Tirar Pelo Natural’ by painter Francisco de Holanda (1517-1585) as a starting point for a reflection on portraiture and the new trend of recording ourselves at every moment. They use digital photography, social media and the phenomenon of selfies as a backdrop for recording a society marked by the capture and publication of every moment of everyday life. An environment where consciousness and states of mind become public, to the point of narcissism, with lives being disseminated online and shared at every moment.
This creative act, the result of a partnership between playwright and director João Garcia Miguel and Dutch painter and artist Eddy Becquart, is about the portrait and its shadows, about self-portraits and their relationship with the world.
