'New Chronologies of Sound' is now an exhibition in Medellín

“New Chronologies of Sound”, commissioned to VIC NIC label by Teatro Aveirense and Aveiro City Council, is now the axis of an exhibition at MAMM - Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, in Colombia. The exhibition opened on March 16th and runs until June 21st, proposing a set of works created by musicians and sound artists of various nationalities.

Presented as an acousmatic exhibition, curated by Hugo Branco and consulting by Jorge Barco, "Nuevas Cronologías Del Sonido" is based on a sound compilation released in physical and digital format, which has already been multiplied by other formats, such as a collection of written essays and a free download sound bank. Featured artists are Mathew Herbert, BJ Nilsen, Lawrence English, AGF, Laura Romero, Natalia Valencia Zuluaga, Miguel Isaza, Kyoka, Hugo Branco, Diana Combo, Budhaditya Chatttopadhyay and Gustavo Costa, who provide different modes of listening the natural and human landscapes of different countries and continents. It sums 12 sound works, ranging from pure field recordings to processed soundscapes, including some more complex compositions and tracks with a strong poetic charge. Together, and lasting 50 minutes, they can now be enjoyed at MAMM through a sound installation.

The origin of “New Chronologies of Sound” was the sudden stop and the global silence that was generated during the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic. With it came the unexpected opportunity to hear previously imperceptible sounds and to improve our perception of the environment. The pandemic, as a break in the rhythm of daily life, allowed everyone’s perception to open up to multiple fields, making this project an investigation and exploration of how artists experienced time during the pandemic and lockdowns, in a combination of sound art, acoustic ecology and electronic composition.
