Works of art created from light in Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda

Starting 23rd September, the historic centres of Aveiro, Guarda and Viseu will light up. Light is the central resource of the initiative, Light Installations in Heritage, an immersive proposal which combines contemporary art and the most important heritage sites in the cities of the A25 Cultural Hub.

This initiative starts with the European Heritage Days and celebrates historic centres through art. Original large-scale artistic interventions were created using light as a central resource, in a site-specific register, with the objective of valuing places of particular heritage relevance in the municipalities, through an innovative artistic approach, connecting heritage with contemporary art.

In Aveiro, the chosen location was the ATLAS Aveiro building, where the artist, Henrique Vilão, will present a work of light, colour and sound in constant change on 23rd and 24th September, with a unique and unrepeatable inauguration at 21:00, which will start the display period and will turn on the entire installation.

A light installation covering the entire Rua Direita has been designed for the city of Viseu, by the light designer, LUZO, in an ode to one of the city's most traditional arteries and which uses neon and arrows as its main inspirations. To be visited between 24th September and 31st October.

In Guarda, on 1st and 2nd October, it will be David Negrão, Catarina Bandola, Alexandre Bandola and Nuno Paula’s turn to present, curated by the artist, Manuel Borges, taking place in three emblematic spaces: Jardim José de Lemos, Torre dos Ferreiros and Passo do Biu. They seek to enhance the city’s heritage, using light, video, sound and special effects as central elements, providing new ways of interpreting community and identity symbols.

The Light Installations in Heritage project provides new routes for the interpretation of community symbols and identity in Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda, as it reflects on the physical architecture of cities, not only of buildings or monuments or physical spaces, but also the appropriation promoted daily by the experiences of their resident communities.

The objective is to also promote sustainable processes, both in terms of energy and the materials used in the installations. This action will take place simultaneously, functioning as a proposal for an artistic-cultural “tour” through the three cities, stimulating new ways of visiting and discovering them.
